The Long Wait is Over: Bring on the NFL!!!
Thursday, September 07, 2006Fall is my favorite season of the year. Yeah, it’s nice to lose that uncomfortable heat and humidity of the summer and the scenery of the leaves changing color is pretty and all, but I think most people reading this know why I’m such a fan of Autumn.
Tonight we see the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Miami Dolphins to kick off the NFL season. There are so many things to look forward to in the coming months on and off the field.
One thing I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about during the off season is which division is the best in football. Most people tend to think the NFC East is the toughest, but I’m not so sure.
The funny thing about this debate is that it’s usually college football fans that are making arguments like this but for some reason a lot of national NFL pundits seem to find it interesting. Over the next four months, we’ll find out for sure but for the record I actually think the NFC South is the best division…..and I’m a fan of on the teams from the NFC East.
Perhaps one of the biggest stories of the off season has been the signing of Terrell Owens by the Dallas Cowboys and the circus that has predictably ensued. Jerry Jones seemed to go over Bill Parcells’ head by plucking Owens from the free agent market but it’s Parcells who now must live with T.O. and answer questions about him every day. It will be a lot of fun to watch as this soap opera unfolds.
How about the NFL Draft? What were the Houston Texans thinking?! I guess they had a lot of confidence in Domanick Davis and David Carr and therefore passed on Reggie Bush and Vince Young. Now, Domanick Davis has been cut and New Orleans has a new savior. It looks like the legacy Charley Casserly will leave the Texans is that he essentially traded Reggie Bush for Mario Williams and leaving the Texans with Wali Lundy.
How about some of the big names moving to other teams? How will Daunte Culpepper change the Dolphins’ offense even though Ricky Williams is out for the year? How will Drew Brees change things in New Orleans and how will he complement Reggie Bush? Will Phillip Rivers take over in San Diego where Brees left off and take Schottenheimer’s Chargers to the playoffs? Is LaVar Arrington counting down the days before he gets a chance to dish out some pain against Joe Gibbs’ Redskins?
Who will be the teams to step up and who will be the ones to drop off? Many predict the Carolina Panthers will be making the trip to South Beach in early February, but are they forgetting the Seattle Seahawks who took it to the Panthers in the playoffs last year and only got better in the off season?
How will the new head coaches do? Herm Edwards comes into high expectations in Kansas City, while fans of Minnesota, Detroit, and the New York Jets probably know that more time is needed before the head coaches of their teams can get them back to the promised land.
No one knows the answers to all of the questions for sure but it will be fun watching each one get answered as the season progresses. T.G.I.F. (S)! – Thank God It’s Football Season!!!
