Morons on the Loose
Tuesday, May 30, 2006Want to know why people attack Atlanta as a sports town? It is because of idiots like Tim McCarver making absolutely incorrect statements on national television selling them off as fact. The truth of the matter is that people outside of Atlanta know very little about Atlanta. Their opinions are formed by national media who caries as much knowledge about the city.
McCarver stated during Saturday's nationally broadcasted game on Fox between Atlanta and Chicago that during the Braves 14 straight division title run, Chicago has averaged 8,000 fans per game greater than Atlanta. WRONG!!! This is only true for the last three years. Over the last three years when Chicago has been competitive and even had a shot at a world series they have averaged about 8,000 fans more per game than Atlanta. Chicago is a city of over 3 million people with a metro population of somewhere around 10 million. Atlanta has a city population of about 400,000 people and a metro population of less than 5 million.
So, how do Atlanta and Chicago really compare during the 15 years that cover the 14 straight titles? During that span Atlanta has averaged 4,000 per game more fans than Chicago. Chicago has had 2 years less than 2 million total attendance, Atlanta 0. Chicago has had 2 years over 3 million total attendance, Atlanta 6. So, is this the case of a few great Atlanta years throwing off the numbers? Not at all. Atlanta drew better than Chicago in 10 straight years. In fact, Chicago’s last 3 years throw off the numbers. If you take out those 3 seasons, Atlanta has averaged over 7,000 per game better than Chicago.
Next time you hear comments from national media, you may want to double check the facts before taking it as truth.
